Audi has rolled out a dedicated Spotify application for its vehicles, marking the first time an automaker has deployed the music streaming service's ground-up software. Developed in partnership with the Volkswagen Group’s Cariad software division, the new platform moves away from the standardized templates found in systems like Android Automotive OS. Spotify representatives noted that the company completely controls the interface design to deliver a user experience closely mirroring its desktop application.
The software takes advantage of modern vehicle infotainment displays and passenger screens. When specific vehicle configurations include a passenger display, front-seat occupants can stream music videos while the car is in motion. Passengers can also view real-time synchronized lyrics, scan QR codes to join listening parties, and contribute to collaborative road trip playlists. Meanwhile, safety protocols restrict these advanced visual features on the main center console display once the vehicle starts moving.
Drivers can interact with the system using Audi's built-in voice assistant, issuing voice commands to search for specific tracks or swap playlists without diverting attention from the road. The software also brings advanced platform features like Spotify Jam and the AI-powered DJ to the vehicle dashboard for the first time. Users can download the application directly from the Audi Application Store at no additional cost, provided they log in using an active smartphone account.
