Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation has outlined plans to acquire six portable electronic warfare kits capable of blocking satellite navigation and drone control links. The procurement responds to years of recurring GPS interference experienced across Europe's eastern flank, which European governments have frequently attributed to Russian operations. NATO aims to expose aircrews, maritime units, and ground forces to realistic electromagnetic interference during military exercises.
According to official specifications, each portable unit must be lightweight enough for deployment by one or two personnel within a 30-minute window. The systems require a flexible blackout radius spanning from 500 meters to 11 kilometers, allowing operators to adjust the interference zone dynamically. Furthermore, the kits must be engineered to simultaneously disrupt all major global navigation satellite systems, including America's GPS, Russia's GLONASS, Europe's Galileo, and China's BeiDou, across multiple frequency bands.
Beyond neutralizing satellite navigation, the equipment must target radio frequencies utilized for unmanned aerial vehicle control and video links. The technical parameters specify capabilities within the 400 to 500 MHz, 2 to 3 GHz, and 5 to 6 GHz spectrums to effectively interfere with modern small drones. Designed for operation by non-specialists via a laptop interface, the units will feature encrypted satellite links for remote operation, four-hour battery backups, and directional or omnidirectional antennas.
