Samsung Develops MPO Tech to Rival LG in Next-Gen OLED Production

Samsung Display is aggressively advancing next-generation OLED panel development through a proprietary approach known as Micro Patterned OLED, or MPO. Industry reports indicate that Samsung has been actively developing this FMM-free method since March 2026, with a targeted product readiness window stretching from late 2026 into early 2027. Much like rival efforts from LG Display, the core objective centers on dropping the traditional Fine Metal Mask manufacturing process to achieve superior brightness, enhanced energy efficiency, and potentially lower production costs over time.

While both display giants are heading toward an FMM-free future, their engineering methodologies diverge significantly. LG's FLiPP process relies on covering panels in organic materials before removing unwanted portions via etching and photolithography. In contrast, Samsung's MPO utilizes microscopic structures that act as physical barriers to guide organic materials precisely where needed, before those structures are ultimately removed. Beyond manufacturing efficiency, industry analysts suggest that Samsung's distinct MPO technique could help the company successfully navigate complex active patent landscapes.

Current prototypes for Samsung's MPO technology measure seven inches, signaling an immediate focus on smaller form factors such as smartphones and smartwatches, whereas competitor initiatives are targeting larger laptop and monitor displays. Despite the promising outlook for material waste reduction and pixel efficiency, major scaling hurdles remain. Yield rates continue to dictate the ultimate commercial viability of any new display fabrication method. Until production test runs prove that these advanced panels can be manufactured reliably at scale without prohibitive defect rates, the true market impact of FMM-free OLED remains on the horizon.
