Are Apple AirTags Allowed in Checked Luggage by the TSA?

Lost luggage ranks high on the list of travel stressors, prompting many passengers to slip tracking devices like Apple AirTags into their suitcases. While keeping tabs on checked bags offers peace of mind, stringent airport regulations regarding lithium batteries often lead travelers to question whether these trackers violate safety policies.

The Transportation Security Administration enforces strict limitations on lithium batteries due to the risk of thermal runaway, a dangerous chain reaction where a battery uncontrollably overheats and can cause a fire in the cargo hold. Because of these hazards, the FAA requires most loose lithium-ion batteries and portable power banks to stay in the cabin rather than checked baggage. However, AirTags operate differently.

An Apple AirTag relies on a tiny CR2032 coin cell battery containing less than 0.1 grams of lithium, falling well beneath the TSA threshold. Additionally, the International Civil Aviation Organization passed an amendment permitting lithium-powered tracking devices in checked bags if their lithium content stays below 0.3 grams. Travelers can therefore continue packing AirTags in their luggage without violating domestic or international flight regulations.
