Filmmaker Rian Johnson has stepped into the iOS software space by launching a new camera application designed to bring cinematic color science to the iPhone. Developed alongside his longtime cinematographer Steve Yedlin and color science coder Eric Cameron, the newly released application aims to bypass standard mobile image pipelines in favor of custom processing pipelines used in feature films.

The software, titled Chromagraph Camera, originates from a personal request by Johnson to build a streamlined tool for capturing still photographs. Rather than layering a simple visual filter over Apple's native output, the application intercepts raw image data at the sensor level. It replaces the default tone management with the exact mathematical algorithms Yedlin utilizes for motion picture grading, producing specific treatments for tonality, chromaticity, grain, and halation.

While third-party photography tools have long populated the App Store, this release focuses strictly on still image capture. Support for video recording may arrive in future updates, though hardware limitations would likely restrict functionality to newer iPhone models. Priced at $12.99, the software currently maintains a strong position on the App Store charts.

Android users will likely miss out on the release due to hardware fragmentation. According to the creators, the predictable and consistent hardware specifications across Apple devices enable precise calibration, a level of control that a small development team cannot easily replicate across the wide variety of Android handsets.
