Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has found himself at the center of a classified federal investigation examining an alleged spy network and the illegal smuggling of advanced American artificial intelligence hardware into China. According to a recent report by the New York Times, intelligence agencies identified a corporate executive linked to Singapore-based data center firm Megaspeed as an operative working on behalf of the Chinese government. The executive, known publicly as Alice Huang or Huang Le, briefly served as Megaspeed's managing director after its launch in late 2023 before her name was scrubbed from corporate filings.
Federal scrutiny over Megaspeed intensified after a Commerce Department official inspected a company data center in Malaysia and discovered unopened boxes of Nvidia hardware, sparking fears that the high-powered components were being diverted to bypass strict U.S. export controls. Intelligence agencies subsequently surveilled electronic communications and utilized a legal unmasking process, which reportedly revealed contacts between Alice Huang and the Nvidia CEO. Public photographs from a Taipei tech trade show in mid-2024 also placed the two individuals in the same social setting.
An Nvidia spokesperson strongly defended the chief executive, emphasizing that interactions with customer executives are a routine part of a CEO's responsibilities and noting that prior allegations regarding Megaspeed redirecting chips were thoroughly investigated and dismissed. The company stated it has received no warnings from the U.S. government regarding any security threats. Meanwhile, Jensen Huang has actively campaigned against heavy domestic AI regulations and pushed to ease federal restrictions on selling advanced processors overseas, securing a policy shift allowing the sale of H200 chips to Chinese buyers under a profit-sharing arrangement with the government.
Intelligence findings concerning Megaspeed and the CEO's connections were reportedly shared with the Trump administration last year, though no formal defensive briefing has been issued to Huang by national security officials. While investigators have found no definitive proof that the Nvidia chief was aware of the executive's alleged espionage activities, unnamed administration officials cited by the Times have questioned whether the high-level association could remain entirely unnoticed.
