Collectibe movie theater popcorn buckets have turned into a major fixture of post-pandemic cinema recovery. If hawking molded plastic helps theater chains keep their operational lights on, industry observers generally accept the hustle. However, the ongoing commercialization of these food receptacles raises a fundamental question about creative execution. Two years after the viral success of the Dune: Part Two Sandworm container, AMC Theatres has officially decided to double down for the upcoming release of Dune: Part Three.

The theater chain plans to stock two distinct themed items for the premiere, labeled the Sandworm Thumper and the Double Sandworm. Each product features a worm-shaped hand opening, with the double version naturally incorporating a second orifice. While the addition of a second hole technically solves a functional issue by allowing two people to grab snacks simultaneously, it also leans heavily into the crude internet humor that plagued the original merchandise.

Novelty film marketing has occasionally produced clever physical items, such as handbag-shaped containers for fashion-themed sequels or uniquely themed wearable gear tied to fighting game franchises. Yet these clever concepts remain rare outliers in a sea of increasingly repetitive plastic bowls and character busts. As studios and theater operators continue leaning on absurdly shaped merchandise, the prevailing fatigue suggests that shock value alone can no longer carry uninspired design work.
