Meta Trials Threads Friends for Smaller Group Sharing

Meta Trials Threads Friends for Smaller Group Sharing
Share

Meta has begun testing a new feature called Threads Friends, which allows users to share posts privately with smaller groups of followers. Currently rolling out in Ireland, Italy, and Japan, the tool functions similarly to a close friends list. Users can opt to share updates with up to 50 people, referred to internally as either friends or 'Thriends,' without broadcasting them to the entire platform.

The concept bears a strong resemblance to Twitter's now-defunct Circles feature, which previously allowed users to restrict posts to a curated audience of up to 150 people before being discontinued a year after its launch. To simplify the setup process for Threads users, Meta's system automatically suggests frequent connections for the list, though the roster remains fully customizable.

Interface elements for the test include a green bubble appearing at the top of the feed, granting access to friends-only posts shared within the preceding 24 hours. While product design director Laura Javier offered a preview of the visual layout and an Easter egg that rebrands the feature to 'Thriends,' Meta has not yet disclosed a timeline for a broader international rollout.
