Reddit is preparing to implement major changes that will restrict content for unregistered visitors, steering the platform toward becoming a primarily logged-in experience. In a post on the site, CEO Steve Huffman stated that delivering personalization and core platform functionality requires users to be signed into an account. While acknowledging that the shift marks a significant departure for open-internet advocates, Huffman argued that the platform has grown too large for anonymous browsing to remain viable.

The upcoming changes are partially designed to combat unauthorized access and data scraping. Huffman noted that the vast majority of web scraping occurs through logged-out browsing sessions. By tightening access requirements, the company hopes to protect its data while driving users toward what he described as an intentional relationship with the platform. Enhanced login mandates are also expected to bolster Reddit's advertising business by enabling better interest-based targeting through subreddit activity, replacing untargeted ads.

Despite the strategic push for user accounts, certain areas of the site are expected to remain accessible. Huffman indicated that the front page, external search referrals, and shared links should still allow some visibility for visitors arriving from outside sources. Reddit plans to test these adjustments in select international markets outside the United States in the coming months, balancing restrictions against the utility of search-driven traffic.

The announcement arrives alongside financial disclosures showing that search traffic has dropped by over one million referrals weekly, hitting logged-out and web traffic the hardest. Meanwhile, app users and logged-in daily active users currently drive more than 80 percent of Reddit's monetization. The proposed changes follow a series of platform updates aimed at driving user acquisition, including previous restrictions on Old Reddit and expanded mobile app download overlays.
