Filmmaker Karyn Kusama has officially signed on to direct a feature film adaptation of the video game Mouthwashing for Sony Pictures. Known for her work on Jennifer’s Body, Kusama will tackle the psychological horror project from a script written by Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay. Production is being spearheaded by Scott Derrickson, bringing together a creative team recognized for atmospheric and tense storytelling.
The narrative centers on five crew members trapped aboard the space freighter Tulpar. Following a catastrophic crash landing on an asteroid, the survivors face dwindling supplies, severe isolation, and rapidly mounting paranoia that exposes deep fractures among the crew. The psychological pressure cooker dynamic mirrors the harrowing themes found in the original source material.
While casting and production timelines remain under wraps, the project adds to a growing slate of video game adaptations making the jump to the big screen. Sony has not yet announced a target release window for the film, as development continues under Kusama's direction.
