Nvidia Considers Guaranteeing Debt for Nscale AI Data Center

Nvidia is currently evaluating a plan to act as a financial guarantor for billions in debt tied to Nscale's massive AI data center project in West Virginia. According to recent reports, the proposed arrangement involves a residual value guarantee that would see the chipmaking giant step in if Nscale defaults on construction payments. Under this structure, Nvidia would temporarily take control of the facility to help find a buyer and a new tenant, mitigating risks as Wall Street scrutinizes soaring infrastructure expenditures.

The West Virginia campus is anchored by a massive contract signed by Anthropic for the site's first building, which is slated to house Nvidia's upcoming Vera Rubin architecture. However, the development has faced multiple hurdles, including site runoff issues that impacted local residents before securing state certification in September. Nscale is simultaneously pursuing a public offering at a valuation reaching up to $35 billion, even as broader market jitters weigh heavily on neocloud providers and AI infrastructure financing.

Nvidia has already funneled roughly $170 billion into the sector through various credit supports and investments, including a $1 billion convertible financing commitment made to Nscale earlier in the fall. By weighing a potential cosigning agreement, the hardware titan aims to keep critical deployment pipelines moving forward while locking in massive demand for its advanced processors. As financial markets grow increasingly cautious regarding the staggering capital requirements of the generative AI boom, hardware suppliers are increasingly stepping directly into the financing chain to safeguard their own downstream customer base.
