Lost for Four Decades, the Similar Firefly Has Been Found in Delaware

A tiny insect once thought to have vanished from the eastern and southern United States has officially stepped back into the scientific record. Entomologists recently tracked down Pyractomena similis, commonly known as the similar firefly, in a meadow at Brandywine Creek State Park in Delaware. First categorized in 1957 by American entomologist John Wagener Green, the species had evaded documentation for over forty years, with no confirmed sightings recorded since 1983. Its prolonged absence eventually landed it on the Most Wanted list of lost species maintained by the conservation group Re:Wild.

The successful rediscovery was not merely a stroke of luck, but the result of a targeted survey led by scientist Christopher “Kitt” Heckscher and his research team. Identifying the elusive insect required keen observation of its distinct behavior, specifically an amber-colored flash delivered in a long, rhythmic pattern. To confirm the finding beyond doubt, researchers examined male genitalia to rule out closely related species before detailing their findings in the Journal of Lost Species.

While this specific rediscovery brings a long-missing insect back into view, it also underscores a broader environmental monitoring gap. Researchers note that at least 28 other firefly species native to the United States and Canada currently qualify as lost, meaning scientists have recorded no confirmed sightings for at least a decade. These disappearances often stem from a combination of habitat loss, urban sprawl, light pollution, declining populations, and a general lack of targeted field surveys.

With a confirmed habitat now identified, conservationists plan to conduct follow-up surveys to better understand the true distribution and population size of the similar firefly. Protecting these fragile ecosystems from encroaching development and environmental stressors remains a primary focus as researchers turn their attention toward locating other missing species hiding in plain sight across North America.
