As Hollywood leans heavily into nostalgia with veteran superhero actors reprising their past roles, one major franchise alumnus is drawing a hard line. Jennifer Lawrence has effectively shut down any speculation regarding a potential return to the X-Men universe as the shape-shifting mutant Mystique, citing the grueling physical toll of the character's signature look.
Reflecting on her time taking up the role starting with 2011's X-Men: First Class, Lawrence recently opened up about the intensive preparation process in separate interviews with Allure magazine and the Call Her Daddy podcast. While she expressed fondness for performing stunts and working with her stunt double, the process of applying the blue aesthetic proved to be a persistent hurdle. She recalled spending eight hours in the makeup chair during the production of First Class, describing the experience as involving cold compressing airbrushes and relentless tickling.
Lawrence is not alone in facing the daunting makeup requirements of the character, as her predecessor Rebecca Romijn endured an even longer process involving complex prosthetics. When directly asked by Allure if there is any possibility of donning the scales once more, Lawrence delivered a candid response, stating she would never say never but adding an absolute refusal. Fans hoping to see the actor on screen can instead look forward to her upcoming projects, including headlining Zach Cregger's upcoming film The Flood.
