Your daily commute might soon see the boundaries between personal time and the office blur even further. Code hidden deep within Android Auto version 18.0.664204 suggests that Google is actively exploring support for Work Profiles on the dashboard display.
During a recent teardown, developers uncovered an inactive Work Mode tile featuring a distinct briefcase icon over the app drawer. While tapping the toggle currently yields no response, its presence points to an impending feature that could bridge the gap between corporate communication tools and in-car infotainment systems.
Work Profiles are designed to isolate employer-managed applications from personal data on employee-owned smartphones, marked clearly by small briefcase badges. Currently, running these managed applications on a car dashboard comes with severe limitations. For instance, Microsoft Teams supports audio calls through Android Auto, yet the integration fails entirely if the application resides inside a managed Work Profile. Google Meet faces similar hurdles, allowing active work calls to mirror on the dashboard while blocking upcoming meetings and call histories from the same profile.
If Google eventually activates this feature, it could offer drivers a way to easily manage corporate meetings on the go. Conversely, it raises valid concerns about extending office connectivity directly into the driver seat, potentially disrupting the quiet sanctuary of the daily commute. For now, the tile remains non-functional, and Google has yet to officially announce a timeline or confirm the full scope of the experimental setting.
