Anthropic is actively expanding the role of its Claude AI model across multiple stages of pharmaceutical research and drug development. By collaborating directly with biotechnology developers, the company aims to tackle complex scientific and administrative bottlenecks ranging from molecular design to clinical trial preparation. These partnerships target experimental treatments for cancer, food allergies, and rare muscular disorders.

At Generate Biomedicines, researchers utilized Claude Code to modify a component of CAR T-cell therapy traditionally used against blood cancers. The team successfully shortened the component by approximately 70 percent to make room for genetic instructions targeting solid tumours. Laboratory experiments revealed that immune cells produced roughly ten times more cancer-detecting receptors, destroying cancer cells more effectively and maintaining activity over longer periods.

Other biotech companies are leveraging the system for distinct tasks. Divergence Labs generated about 35,000 molecular designs within a month for a potential food-allergy treatment involving IgE, leading to successful initial identifications of effective binding designs. Meanwhile, BigHat Biosciences combined Claude with automated laboratory equipment to refine antibody fragments, producing a cancer-targeting version that bound to its target more than ten times as tightly while retaining stability at higher temperatures.

Beyond molecular design, companies are deploying the AI to streamline administrative and clinical workflows. Enveda applied Claude to review complex manufacturing documentation, cutting manual checking time by 89 percent and reducing a 25-hour review process to under three hours. Furthermore, Anthropic partnered with Bristol Myers Squibb to evaluate early clinical study plans, demonstrating how the model can quickly generate robust initial analysis for pharmaceutical development options.
