The countdown has begun for the complete retirement of the United Kingdom's legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network. Openreach has reminded both consumers and businesses that the network will be switched off on January 31, 2027, with the infrastructure firm confirming there will be no extensions to this final deadline.
Plans to shut down the aging PSTN and ISDN systems were initially announced back in 2017 with an earlier target, though the timeline was later pushed back. Openreach notes that the infrastructure is increasingly difficult to maintain, prone to faults, and incapable of supporting modern digital demands. While roughly 15 million lines have already transitioned to digital Internet Protocol fiber networks, numerous critical systems continue to rely on legacy connections.
Remaining holdouts include commercial point-of-sale terminals, security alarms, fire systems, and personal care devices used by elderly individuals. Officials warn that delaying the transition complicates vital operations that require careful planning and supplier coordination. Organizations failing to migrate before the deadline face limited connectivity or reliance on a temporary emergency voice-only backup service.
