Samsung Reportedly Targets Mid-December Release for New Smart Glasses

Samsung is reportedly preparing to bring its long-teased smart glasses to market as early as mid-December. According to reports from the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, which cited local electronics industry sources, the upcoming wearable device will initially launch in just two markets: the United States and South Korea. While Samsung has not yet officially confirmed these details or provided a definitive price tag, the reported timeline offers the clearest picture yet of the hardware's impending arrival.

The hardware itself is being developed in partnership with eyewear brand Gentle Monster. However, stepping into the smart glasses market right now means navigating a vastly different social and political environment than when the product was first teased back in May. Public skepticism has grown noticeably, fueled by high-profile pushback from figures like Lorde and rising concerns regarding the misuse of recording technology in public spaces.

Regulatory pressure is also mounting across international markets. European regulators have taken aggressive stances, featuring a proposed national ban in Norway and a recent citywide restriction in Hamburg, Germany, targeting public usage. Meanwhile, lawmakers in the United States are beginning to scrutinize the privacy implications of wearable AI devices more closely, posing potential headwinds for Samsung and competitors like Meta as these products approach consumers.
