Meta is winding down support for its older virtual reality hardware. The company confirmed that software development for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets will conclude with version 213, slated for release by March 2027. Following this final feature update, Meta plans to deliver security patches and critical bug fixes through the end of 2027. Developers will also retain the ability to submit apps supporting these legacy platforms until December 2027.

Launched in 2020 and 2022 respectively, the Quest 2 and Quest Pro were officially discontinued by the hardware maker in 2024. Leadership has since positioned the newer Quest 3 and Quest 3S as the baseline hardware for ecosystem users, pointing to their expanded performance headroom and native mixed-reality capabilities. The transition clears the runway for the anticipated spring 2027 release of Meta's upcoming VR glasses, which will utilize the same core operating system and software development kits.

Despite the looming cutoff, the legacy hardware commands a significant legacy footprint. Millions of users continue to utilize the devices that initially built the modern consumer VR market. While software deprecation marks a definitive end of life for the hardware generation, apps designed for newer hardware architectures will maintain forward compatibility with upcoming Meta headsets.
