Apple Eyes Third-Party AI Apps and Partnerships to Boost Services Revenue

Apple’s massive services division continues to operate at record levels, yet the tech giant faces mounting pressure across multiple fronts. The cornerstone of this ecosystem, the App Store, has recently confronted severe headwinds, including regulatory scrutiny, legal challenges, and a noticeable slump in mobile gaming. Despite these hurdles, Apple signaled during its latest earnings call that it sees a viable path forward by leveraging third-party artificial intelligence applications and partnerships.

When addressing how artificial intelligence might contribute to long-term revenue growth, Apple Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh pointed toward hardware upgrades driven by new AI capabilities. However, he also emphasized potential opportunities spanning across third-party applications and external partnerships alongside traditional first-party offerings. Parekh stopped short of detailing the exact nature of these third-party monetization strategies, leaving market analysts and investors to speculate on how the ecosystem might evolve.

Industry watchers suggest Apple could potentially profit by facilitating the distribution of third-party AI agents through its marketplace, capturing a cut of the revenue they generate. These potential maneuvers arrive at a delicate time for the company's commission structure. Global legal battles and regulatory interventions—such as those in Brazil, Japan, and the United States following the Epic Games litigation—have already trimmed commission revenues and forced concessions regarding external payment systems. Even so, Apple reported a record number of paid subscriptions during the quarter, offset by ongoing softness in mobile gaming that executives expect to persist into the summer quarter.
