OpenAI has officially created a brand new executive position aimed at bridging the gap between artificial intelligence development and defense strategy. Former Trump Administration Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has stepped into the role of Senior Counselor for National Security Modernization. According to the company statement released Monday, Driscoll will advise leadership on how advanced AI systems can strengthen both national and cyber security, while placing a heavy emphasis on collaborating with international allies to promote responsible deployment.
Driscoll brings a background steeped in military operations and institutional familiarity to the artificial intelligence firm. A veteran who served in Iraq in 2009 and earned the Army Commendation Medal and Combat Action Badge, his resume also includes a stint at investment bank BlackArch Partners and a Yale Law School connection that links him to Vice President J.D. Vance. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman pointed to this hire as a vital step for the United States to seize an extraordinary opportunity to work alongside partner nations in spreading democratic AI adoption globally.
The transition to private sector tech follows a tumultuous exit from the Pentagon. Driscoll reportedly resigned from his Department of Defense position in August following months of policy disagreements with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth centered around military modernization initiatives. In his new capacity at OpenAI, Driscoll argues that machine learning models will provide defense institutions with crucial operational speed. He stated that the technology will help armed forces cut through administrative paperwork, process vast streams of intelligence, and deliver accurate information rapidly to decision-makers.
