Meta is officially winding down active feature development for two of its most popular virtual reality hardware platforms. Both the Quest 2, launched in 2020, and the Quest Pro, released in 2022, will receive their final operating system updates in March 2027. Despite the shift in development focus, the company intends to provide crucial security patches and bug fixes through the end of December 2027.
Millions of consumers continue to actively use both headset models, according to Meta's recent announcements detailing the hardware lifecycle changes. Even as the tech giant pivots its hardware strategy toward newer wearables like Meta VR Glasses and the Quest 3 series, the underlying software ecosystem for the aging devices will not vanish immediately. Developers will have until December 2027 to submit new applications for the older hardware, while existing apps remain eligible for post-support updates.
For end users, the app stores for both the Quest 2 and Quest Pro will remain open past the final support deadlines. Furthermore, cross-play functionality with the newer Quest 3 and Quest 3S will continue after feature development officially concludes. This approach allows current hardware owners to maintain basic usability as the industry transitions toward newer mixed reality architectures.
