The
Government of India has announced the formation of a National Cybersecurity
Task Force, a high-level interagency body tasked with developing and
coordinating the nation's response to increasingly sophisticated cyber threats
targeting both government systems and critical private sector infrastructure.
The task force represents India's most ambitious cybersecurity coordination
effort to date.
The task
force will be co-chaired by the National Security Advisor and the Minister of
Electronics and Information Technology and will include representatives from
defense, intelligence, law enforcement, and key economic sectors. Its mandate
includes developing a comprehensive national cybersecurity strategy,
coordinating incident response, establishing cybersecurity standards for
critical infrastructure, and building the nation's cybersecurity talent
pipeline.
"India's
digital economy is among the fastest growing in the world, and the cyber
threats we face are growing in proportion," said the National Security
Advisor at the announcement ceremony. "This task force will ensure that
our national cybersecurity posture matches the ambition and scale of our
digital aspirations."
The
announcement comes in the wake of a significant increase in cyberattacks
targeting Indian government agencies, financial institutions, and healthcare
providers over the past year. India has also experienced several high-profile
ransomware attacks against critical infrastructure and large corporations.
The task
force will have dedicated authority to allocate emergency resources during
significant cybersecurity incidents and will establish 24/7 cyber incident
reporting and response centers across all major states. International
cybersecurity cooperation and information sharing with allied nations will also
be a key component of its mandate.
