Selling or exchanging an old smartphone is common, but users must take important steps before giving it away. A phone contains personal data such as photos, contacts, emails, documents, banking apps, messages, and login information. If not removed properly, this data can be misused.
The first step is to back up important data. Photos, contacts, documents, and app data should be saved to cloud storage or another device. After backup, users should sign out from all accounts such as Google, Apple ID, email, social media, and payment apps.
Remove SIM card and memory card before selling the phone. Disable screen lock and remove biometric data such as fingerprints and face unlock. Then perform a factory reset from phone settings.
After reset, restart the phone and check whether personal data has been removed. If possible, avoid giving the phone with logged-in accounts or saved passwords. Users should also remove the device from account security settings.
Cleaning the phone physically and providing original bill, box, or charger can increase resale value.
Selling a phone safely protects privacy and gives the next user a clean device.
