OpenAI and semiconductor design software company Synopsys have announced a multi-year strategic partnership to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized AI model designed specifically for semiconductor and chip-design workflows. The announcement was made on September 30, 2026. Synopsys Investor Relations
The new system will combine OpenAI's advanced AI models with Synopsys' electronic design automation (EDA) tools and semiconductor engineering expertise. Instead of simply providing suggestions to engineers, GPT-Synopsys is being designed to directly operate Synopsys' tools, interpret their results and iteratively improve chip designs.
According to Synopsys, engineers will be able to provide objectives such as improving power, performance and area (PPA), timing optimization and verification. AI agents can then run design tools, analyze the output, make changes and repeat the process before the final design is reviewed by engineers. Synopsys Investor Relations
The companies say the model will run on OpenAI-hosted infrastructure and integrate with Synopsys.ai and the company's Autopilot agentic AI platform. Early technology engagements with semiconductor customers are already underway.
Security and data protection are also part of the planned service. Synopsys says customer-specific design data will not be used to train the model and will be protected with encryption, configurable retention controls, auditing and access management. Synopsys Investor Relations
The partnership could make AI a more direct part of the semiconductor design process, potentially helping engineers explore more design alternatives and reduce the time required to move complex chip designs toward manufacturing.
