Film enthusiasts and high-end collectors will soon have the chance to own pieces of cinematic history as hundreds of items from the estate of Stanley Kubrick head to auction. Bonhams in London will host the sale early next year, preceded by an extensive multi-city public exhibition tour that kicks off next week in New York. The curated collection draws directly from the personal archives of one of the most celebrated directors in cinema.
Among the standout pieces featured in the upcoming sale are artifacts that defined modern filmmaking and pop culture. Prospective buyers and cinema fans can view the actual star child prop from the conclusion of 2001: A Space Odyssey, alongside the axe wielded by Jack Nicholson in The Shining. The catalog also includes the dresses worn by the Grady twins, Kubrick's personal director's chair, heavily annotated production scripts, personal possessions, awards, and rare filmmaking equipment.
Before the final auction takes place in London from January 18 through February 2, with the actual sale on February 3, selected highlights will travel the globe. The exhibition stops in New York from October 16 to October 23, moves to Los Angeles from November 2 to November 6, and travels to Paris for select dates between November 16 and November 24. This tour offers the public a rare glimpse into the meticulous craftsmanship and creative process behind Kubrick's legendary filmography.
