Amazon MGM Studios is breathing new life into its long-discussed Stargate television revival by enlisting WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer to helm the project. The sci-fi franchise, which dates back to the 1994 feature film and subsequent 1997 series Stargate SG-1, is heading back to the drawing board under Schaeffer's overall deal with the studio. A dedicated writers' room is set to open soon to map out the new direction.

The pivot comes after an earlier iteration of the series led by franchise veteran Martin Gero was shelved in June. Executives at Amazon reportedly worried that Gero's concept relied too heavily on deep franchise lore, potentially alienating viewers who had no prior exposure to the decades-old universe. By bringing in Schaeffer—known for steering Disney+ hits like WandaVision and Agatha All Along—the studio appears focused on crafting a narrative that balances appeal for longtime devotees with accessibility for fresh audiences.

Production details remain tightly under wraps, with zero plot specifics released alongside the announcement. Schaeffer is slated to executive produce alongside Safehouse Pictures partners Joby Harold and Tory Tunell. Whether this latest development phase successfully translates into a greenlit series remains to be seen, but the creative shift signals that Amazon remains committed to mining its intellectual property library for major franchise content.
