Horror auteur Mike Flanagan is heading back to cinematic terrifying heights with his upcoming feature film, The Exorcist: Martyrs. Speaking about the project previously, the filmmaker described it as an opportunity to craft the scariest movie of his career. Following the release of the first trailer, anticipation is mounting for how this new installment will reshape the historic horror franchise following previous entries like 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer. Set to hit theaters on March 12, 2027, the movie looks to lean heavily into gritty police-procedural territory, channeling the distinct atmospheric tension of The Exorcist III.

The narrative centers on an NYPD detective portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, who apprehends Father Sunday, a killer fixated on Catholic iconography played by John Leguizamo. Although the character is slated for execution, the plot twists well beyond a standard criminal capture. The sprawling cast also features Chiwetel Ejiofor and Laurence Fishburne as priests, Sasha Calle as an additional detective, and Jacobi Jupe playing Johansson’s tweenage son.

Flanagan’s track record with intense psychological dread—most notably highlighted by his work on The Haunting of Hill House—has set high expectations for this theatrical release. While audiences digest his recent television output, including a Stephen King series on Prime Video, all eyes are now turning toward the big screen to see if this ambitious cast and procedural angle can deliver the chilling experience the director promised.
