Ukrainian Drone Strikes Cripple Russian Cloud and AI Facilities

A series of targeted drone attacks has severely damaged critical cloud and artificial intelligence infrastructure within Russia, taking down major data centers and disrupting essential digital services. Moving beyond previous operations focused primarily on oil assets, military strikes have increasingly targeted the technological backbone supporting domestic tech operations.

Over recent days, specialized unmanned aerial operations have struck multiple facilities operated by Yandex, often described as Russia's multi-faceted equivalent to major Western tech giants. Reports confirm that a facility in the Vladimir region suffered a complete shutdown following an early morning assault. This follows similar strikes on data center locations in Kaluga and Sasovo near Moscow, the latter of which housed supercomputers utilized for training foundational artificial intelligence models.

The cascading disruptions have impacted widespread digital services relied upon by everyday citizens and commercial enterprises. Yandex's virtual machine hosting, cloud storage solutions, and consumer products including the Alice voice assistant and smart speaker integrations experienced significant outages. Furthermore, the fallout has affected third-party operations, knocking banking platforms, ride-sharing applications, and retail networks offline as underlying cloud infrastructure falters.
