Mozilla has sharply criticized Microsoft for allegedly employing manipulative design practices to force users toward the Edge browser and away from competing alternatives. Highlighting findings from a report titled Over The Edge 2.0, Mozilla pointed out that while Microsoft complies with fairer browser choice mandates inside the European Economic Area due to regulatory pressure, it continues utilizing aggressive tactics across other major global markets including the United States, United Kingdom, and India.
According to the Firefox maker, these techniques involve tricky wording during initial PC setups, system search functions routing links directly through Edge instead of preferred user defaults, and file types reverting back to Microsoft applications. Furthermore, Mozilla argues that newer operating system integrations like Windows Copilot and migration pathways to Windows 11 actively undermine consumer choice by favoring native software infrastructure.
Mozilla maintains that Microsoft's compliance is driven strictly by legal mandates rather than user-first principles. As browsers increasingly function as primary distribution channels for artificial intelligence tools, the battle over default applications has grown significantly higher stakes. Mozilla is now urging international regulators and policymakers outside of Europe to scrutinize these design methods and demand equal accessibility standards worldwide.
