Petri Alanko, the celebrated composer behind Remedy Entertainment's Control, Control Resonant, and Alan Wake 2, has opened up about his future ambitions in the video game industry. Known for his atmospheric and driving soundscapes, Alanko recently shared that he has his sights set firmly on a different genre for his next major undertaking. Given his extensive use of synth elements, the musician expressed a strong desire to dive into a proper science fiction setting.
Speaking about his creative preferences, Alanko highlighted a fondness for dark, tension-filled narratives. He noted that emotional psycho-thrillers provide a rich narrative foundation, especially when blended with sci-fi elements. While mapping out his ideal future assignments, the composer was equally clear about what he intends to avoid. Projects requiring cheerful aesthetics, cozy vibes, or adorable cartoon characters simply do not fit his artistic sensibilities, noting that upbeat titles or cute franchises like My Little Pony are a definitive mismatch for his style.
Shaping his creative outlook around his surroundings in a remote Northern region, Alanko explained that the moody atmosphere of Nordic Noir heavily influences his work. Beyond interactive entertainment, Alanko has also lent his talents to linear media, including the upcoming WWII film Häyhä, which follows Finnish sharpshooter Simo Häyhä. Comparing the two mediums, he suggested that scoring films presents a more straightforward process due to the unchanging nature of the visual timeline, whereas game composition demands dynamic adaptability.
