Ransomware Attack
Cripples Major Hospital Network Across Three States

Threats & Attacks
A
sophisticated ransomware attack has brought down the digital infrastructure of
a major hospital network operating across three states, leaving thousands of
patients in a precarious situation. The attack, believed to have been launched
by a notorious cybercriminal group, encrypted critical patient data, disrupted
appointment scheduling systems, and forced doctors to revert to pen-and-paper
record-keeping.
The attack
began in the early hours of Monday morning, when the hospital's IT team noticed
unusual network activity. Within hours, systems across all 14 affiliated
hospitals were offline. Emergency departments were forced to divert patients to
other facilities, and several elective surgeries had to be postponed.
"This is
one of the most serious cyberattacks we've seen against healthcare
infrastructure," said a spokesperson from the Cybersecurity and
Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). "Patient safety is our top
priority, and we are working around the clock with the affected institutions to
restore services."
Investigators
believe the attackers gained initial access through a phishing email sent to a
hospital employee over two weeks ago. Once inside the network, they moved
laterally across systems before deploying the ransomware payload. The hackers
are demanding a ransom of $10 million in cryptocurrency to provide the
decryption key.
Cybersecurity
experts are urging healthcare organizations to invest in robust backup systems,
employee training, and endpoint detection tools. The FBI has launched a formal
investigation into the attack. As of now, the hospital network has refused to
pay the ransom and is working with third-party security firms to recover its
data.
