Netflix is expanding its sprawling catalog of video game adaptations with a heavyweight creative team attached to one of the industry's most recognizable titles. Donald Glover is set to star in, direct, co-write, and executive produce a live-action adaptation of PUBG. His brother and frequent creative collaborator, Stephen Glover, will join him as a co-writer and executive producer on the project.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds launched in 2017 and quickly became a global cultural phenomenon, popularizing the modern battle royale format. The title holds seven Guinness World Records, including milestones for rapid sales on Steam, massive revenue generation, and record-breaking concurrent player counts. Krafton, the company behind the franchise, is collaborating on the production through its entertainment entity LV3H.
The upcoming PUBG project joins a crowded slate of game-to-screen adaptations currently in development at Netflix. The streaming platform has previously released animated series based on properties like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Splinter Cell, and Devil May Cry. Additional upcoming adaptations span live-action projects like Assassin’s Creed and Gears of War, alongside various animated features tied to Minecraft, Magic: The Gathering, and Clash of Clans, plus a partnership with Sega for properties including Crazy Taxi.
Production timelines and release dates for the PUBG adaptation have not yet been announced by Netflix or the creative team. The collaboration brings together one of gaming's most commercially successful franchises with creators known for critically acclaimed television like Atlanta.
