Microsoft rushes first patch for Surface Laptop Ultra to squash launch bugs

Microsoft has deployed its first firmware update for the Surface Laptop Ultra just six days after the flagship hardware officially went on sale. Distributed via Windows Update as System Hardware Update version 200.0.7.0, the patch targets several prominent launch-week issues reported by reviewers and early adopters, including extended restart times, unexpected system restarts, and screen flickering.

While the rapid software response addresses specific system instability, it leaves deeper hardware-level complaints untouched. Reviewers have pointed out inherent limitations in the device's Mini LED panel, noting a slow black-to-white response time, grayish black levels, and weak local dimming performance. Furthermore, battery longevity tests from various independent channels have fallen short of Microsoft's optimistic fifteen-hour local video playback claims, logging numbers closer to nine hours in standard workloads.

Priced steeply from $2,599.99 up to $5,899.99 for top-tier configurations, the Surface Laptop Ultra represents Microsoft's ambitious first foray into custom Nvidia silicon and Mini LED display technology. Although software patches can successfully resolve boot times and crash bugs, fundamental traits like silicon efficiency and panel characteristics remain permanent features of this first-generation hardware launch.
