How AI Is Changing the Way Movies and Shows Get Made
Film and television production has begun incorporating AI tools across
multiple stages of the process, from generating early concept art and
storyboards to de-aging actors digitally and creating background visual effects
that once required extensive manual work. Some productions have also used AI
for dubbing and lip-syncing dialogue across different languages.
The shift has been contentious within the entertainment industry, with
actors' and writers' unions negotiating specific protections around AI use,
particularly regarding digital likeness rights and the use of AI-generated
scripts. Several recent labor agreements have included explicit language
requiring consent and compensation for any AI use involving a performer's image
or voice.
Studios argue the technology offers significant cost savings,
particularly for effects-heavy productions, while creative professionals
continue pushing for clear boundaries to ensure AI tools support rather than
replace the human talent at the center of filmmaking.
