VRChat Data Breach Exposes 2.4 Million Users' Personal Data
VRChat, Inc.
has filed a formal data breach notification revealing that the personal
information of more than 2.4 million users was compromised in a cyberattack.
According to the notice, attackers gained unauthorized access to VRChat's cloud
environment between May 10 and May 12, 2026, accessing user profile and
login-related data.
The exposed
data reportedly includes usernames, email addresses, and authentication-related
information. VRChat has stated that it is notifying all affected users and has
implemented additional security controls in its cloud infrastructure to prevent
further unauthorized access.
The breach
underscores the growing threat posed to cloud-hosted gaming and social
platforms, which often store vast amounts of user data but may not prioritize
security investment at the same level as financial or healthcare organizations.
VRChat users
are advised to change their passwords immediately, enable multi-factor
authentication, and be vigilant against phishing emails that may exploit the
stolen data. The incident is also under review by data protection regulators to
assess potential compliance implications under applicable privacy laws.
