In a brutal reality check for enterprise IT departments, global research firm Gartner has published a damning report predicting that over 70% of "Mainframe Exit" projects initiated in 2026 will end in total failure. The culprit? A massive, catastrophic overestimation of what Generative AI can actually accomplish when dealing with legacy code.
For decades, the world's largest banks, airlines, and insurance companies have run their mission-critical operations on IBM mainframes coded in COBOL—a programming language so old that the engineers who wrote it are largely retired.

Because these systems handle millions of credit card swipes per second, they are structurally "too big to fail."
