Developer King Art Games is taking a multi-generational approach to the upcoming real-time strategy title, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4. While the studio views the original 2004 game as its primary north star for classic base building and large-scale battles, the development team has also incorporated mechanics from Dawn of War 2 and 3.
Creative director and studio co-founder Jan Theysen explained that leaning solely on the original release was not entirely practical given its age. Because the first title is over two decades old, the team looked to subsequent entries to find a balance between vintage gameplay and modern RTS standards.
Hero mechanics, upgrade paths, and visual aesthetics heavily reflect the style of Dawn of War 2, though heroes are less dominant than they were in the second and third installments. Meanwhile, specific user interface features, such as unit cards positioned at the bottom of the screen, were adapted from Dawn of War 3.
King Art applied a straightforward philosophy to the design process, choosing to retain functional systems rather than reinvent them without cause. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 is scheduled for release on PC on December 3.
